THE VINEYARDS OF CARNUNTUM are not spread out upon precipitous slopes or nestled in dramatic geologic formations, but rather set in the rolling hills that the primordial sea and the meandering Danube formed millions of years ago. Each one of these hills has its own unique geologic history, its own particular exposition and thus its own distinctive flavour. Here in Carnuntum, for many years we have focussed our efforts upon producing cuvées, marrying wines from various soils and different grape varieties into complex works of viticultural art. But currently there is a new process underway in our region: rethinking this, considering how we might articulate the distinctive characters of the individual sites, and allow these to express themselves in a pure fashion.
In the next step, we want to reawaken the distinctive voices of the individual municipalities. As they expressed themselves in earlier times. This process will evolve over many years, a voyage of development leading us back to the origins of our region.
For a very long time the estates of Carnuntum have been dealing with the pyramid of origin. It is not so easy to get it all under one hat. But the result is future-oriented and above all one thing: collaborative. We are sure, that this will give Carnunum a clear profile. Our wines are seperated into single vineyard wines, village wines and region wines. Within the pyramid of origin, we are working with five different DAC grape varieties: Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder and Grüner Veltliner.
